This Dashbashi Canyon and Diamond Bridge tour takes you to one of Georgia's newest favourite day trips: a deep, green canyon near Tsalka, with waterfalls tumbling down its walls and a glass-floored bridge strung high across the gorge. It is a private tour, so it is just your group and your guide, with the day shaped around how adventurous you feel.
It suits nature lovers, active travellers and families with older children, and it is a good choice if you have already seen the classic churches and want something different. The drive from Tbilisi crosses the open, rolling Tsalka plateau, a part of Georgia few visitors see, which makes the canyon all the more of a surprise when you reach its edge.
Highlights of the route
Dashbashi Canyon
Dashbashi Canyon cuts suddenly into the high, flat plateau around Tsalka, and its sheer walls are cloaked in trees, moss and ferns. Several waterfalls drop into the gorge, and a network of trails, stairways and walkways lets you descend towards the river and the falls. The walk is the heart of the day: cool, shady and full of the sound of running water. Along the way you pass viewpoints looking up at the bridge and down into the depths of the canyon. The steps down are easy, but the climb back up takes effort, so go at your own pace. Shoes with good grip are essential, as paths near the water can be damp and slippery.
Diamond Bridge
The Diamond Bridge spans the canyon with a glass floor, giving you a view straight down to the river far below. It takes its name from the faceted, diamond-shaped glass structure that sits at its centre. Crossing it is the most memorable part of the trip for many visitors, and the photographs from the middle are hard to beat. It is a paid attraction, and on site you may find other adrenaline activities run by the operators; ask us what is running when you plan your day. If heights are not for you, the bridge is entirely optional, and the views from the canyon rim are rewarding on their own.
Make it your own
The canyon fits easily into a longer day. Ask us about adding a stop at the Tsalka reservoir, a wide lake on the plateau, or about combining the canyon with other sights in southern Georgia if you are heading on towards Vardzia or Borjomi. For a slower day, we can skip the descent and focus on the rim walks and the bridge; for keen walkers, your guide can plan more time on the trails.
Guides speak English, Russian and Georgian, and the pace is set around your group. Families with younger children can choose the shorter, flatter paths, and older travellers can enjoy the views without tackling the stairs. If you would rather plan the day yourselves, a private driver in Georgia can take you there on your own schedule. You will find more ideas on our day trips from Tbilisi page.
Good to know
- Wear shoes with good grip; the canyon trails include many steps and can be wet near the waterfalls.
- The plateau is higher and cooler than Tbilisi, so bring a warm layer even in summer.
- Late spring to autumn is the best season for walking. Our month-by-month guide can help with timing.
- Bring water and a snack for the walk, and some cash for small purchases near the canyon.
