What a private guide in Tbilisi does for you
A private guide shows your group Tbilisi and the country around it at your own pace, with nobody else on the tour. In practice that means two kinds of day, and most visitors mix them.
City walks in Tbilisi
On foot, your guide takes you through the Old Town: the sulphur baths of Abanotubani, up to Narikala Fortress by foot or cable car, the balconied lanes of Sololaki, the Bridge of Peace, and on to Sameba Cathedral or Mtatsminda if you want the views. Along the way you get the stories that make sense of the place — the Persian, Russian and Soviet layers, the churches, the wine bars and which bakery is worth queueing at. Our first-timer's guide to Tbilisi gives a feel for what a city day can cover.
Day trips with a driver
Beyond the city, your guide travels with you and a driver in a private vehicle. Mtskheta, the old capital, is close by. Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Road, the wine villages of Kakheti, the cave town of Uplistsikhe and the cliff monastery of Vardzia are all popular day trips from Tbilisi. The guide handles the route, the stops and the explaining, so you can simply look out of the window.
Several days with the same guide
Many travellers keep one guide for their whole stay. Over several days you might walk Tbilisi, spend a night in the mountains at Kazbegi, cross to the wine country of Kakheti and finish further west. Having the same person throughout means they get to know what your group enjoys, and the trip gets better as it goes. We can arrange the accommodation along the way, or leave it to you.
Guides in English, Russian and Georgian
Our guides work in English, Russian and Georgian, so your group can choose the language it is most comfortable in. Mention it in your first message and we will plan the trip with a guide who speaks it.
That matters more than it sounds. Russian-speaking travellers often struggle to find a guide who explains Georgia properly rather than reading from a script, and English-speaking visitors want someone who can talk naturally about history, food and everyday life, not just recite dates. Because the tour is private, you can ask questions as they come up, stop for a photograph or change the subject entirely.
If your group speaks more than one language between you, tell us who is coming and we will tell you honestly what works best.
How a day with your guide is shaped around you
Every day with a GeoWonder guide is planned around your group rather than a fixed timetable. Before you travel we agree the rough shape on WhatsApp — where you want to go, what interests you, how much walking suits you — and on the day your guide adjusts as you go.
- Pace. Families with small children and older travellers get shorter walks, more time sitting down and more comfortable stops. Keen walkers cover more ground.
- Length. A few hours in the Old Town, a full day out of the city, or several days strung together: the route fits the time you have.
- Interests. Churches and history, food and wine, architecture, photography, markets. Tell us what you enjoy and the day leans that way.
- Weather. In the mountains, if a pass or trail is closed, your guide reroutes to something worth seeing instead of losing the day.
We can also arrange accommodation, entrance fees and meals, or leave them to you, whichever you prefer.
What affects the cost of a private guide in Tbilisi
The cost of a private guide depends on what your days involve, which is why we quote every trip individually instead of publishing a price list. These are the things that make the difference:
- Group size. A larger group may need a larger vehicle.
- Distance. A walking day in Tbilisi needs no vehicle at all; Kazbegi, Kakheti or Vardzia mean a driver for the day.
- Number of days. One day with a guide is quoted differently from a week travelling the country together.
- Season. Guides and drivers are in higher demand in the busy months. Our month-by-month guide explains what each season brings.
- Vehicle. A sedan, an off-road vehicle for mountain roads, a minivan, or a microbus for a bigger party.
- What is included. Accommodation, entrance fees and meals added to the trip, or left to you.
Send us your dates, group size and a rough idea of the plan, and we will reply with an actual quote for your trip.
How booking a private guide works
Booking a guide takes one short WhatsApp conversation, with no forms and no obligation.
- Message us on WhatsApp with your dates, how many of you there are and anything you already want to see. Phone and email (info@geowonder.tours) work just as well.
- We suggest a plan and a quote. We usually reply within a few hours, and almost always the same day.
- You adjust it. Swap a stop, slow the pace, add a day or take one away until it fits.
- You confirm. We agree payment with you at that point, and we keep it flexible.
Flying in? We can collect you as well: see our airport transfers.
Why choose GeoWonder for your guide
GeoWonder is a local team that has been showing travellers around Georgia, in the Caucasus, since 2013. That brings a few practical advantages:
- Private only. Your guide and vehicle are for your group alone. We do not put strangers together on shared tours.
- Starting points, not packages. The tours below are ideas to build from. Route, pace and length all change to suit you.
- Guide and driver together. For anything outside the city we arrange both, so you deal with one team and one plan. If you only need transport, see our private driver service.
- Easy to reach. We answer on WhatsApp 24/7, before you book and while you are travelling.
