These ski tours in Georgia take you to the country's two main winter resorts: Gudauri, high in the Greater Caucasus with wide, open slopes and deep snow, and Bakuriani, a forested, family-friendly resort in the Lesser Caucasus. Every trip is private and built around your group, from airport transfer to the slopes and back, with a guide who speaks your language.
It suits skiers and snowboarders of every level, families with children learning for the first time, and mixed groups where not everyone wants to ski. Georgia has become a favourite with winter travellers who want good snow, open slopes and great food in the evenings, and it pairs easily with a few days in Tbilisi.
Highlights of the route
Gudauri
Gudauri sits on the southern side of the Greater Caucasus, near the Jvari Pass on the Georgian Military Highway. Most of its slopes lie above the treeline, so the terrain is wide and open, with long runs and plenty of sunshine. It is known for reliable snow and for freeride terrain, and in good conditions heli-skiing operators work in the surrounding mountains. Beginners have gentle areas near the base, while confident skiers can explore the higher lifts. In good weather, tandem paragliding offers a very different view of the resort. Gudauri is also a short drive from Stepantsminda, so a day off the slopes to see Mount Kazbek is easy to arrange.
Bakuriani
Bakuriani lies on a high plateau above Borjomi, surrounded by spruce forest, and was one of the Soviet Union's best-known winter sports centres. Today it is known as Georgia's most family-friendly resort, with gentle, tree-lined runs, ski schools for children and plenty of sledging. More experienced skiers will find longer and steeper runs on the higher slopes. The town has a relaxed, small-resort feel, and it is close to Borjomi, so non-skiers can spend a day tasting mineral water in the spa town's park. Snowy forest walks here are among the most peaceful things to do in Georgia in winter.
Make it your own
Every ski trip we plan is different. Some travellers want a few days in Gudauri followed by a few days in Bakuriani; others want just one resort with sightseeing days built in. Tell us your level, how many days you have and who is travelling, and we will suggest the right balance. Popular additions include our Kazbegi tour from Gudauri, a visit to Borjomi from Bakuriani, or a city day with a private tour guide in Tbilisi before you fly home.
We can arrange accommodation at the resorts or leave it to you, and we run airport transfers from Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi at any hour, with vehicles that suit your group and your kit. Guides speak English, Russian and Georgian, and for families we can plan around lessons, nap times and earlier finishes. Read our guide to Georgia in winter for more ideas.
Good to know
- The season usually runs from around December to March, often longer at Gudauri, depending on snowfall.
- Mountain weather changes quickly, and roads can close briefly after heavy snow. Your guide reroutes rather than losing the day.
- Bring proper winter clothing, sunglasses and sun cream; the sun is strong at altitude.
- Both resorts have equipment hire and ski schools, so you do not need to bring your own kit.
- Carry some cash for small cafés and lift-side kiosks.
